Hello! Welcome to the online home of RPC Shepherding Services. We are a Shepherding service from Chard. We hope you enjoy our website, why not find out more about us, or get in touch. We are a Father and son team, who are prepared to travel within Somerset and surrounding areas. We can do; - Lambing- The process of giving birth in sheep. Also the work of tending lambing ewes (shepherds are said to lamb their flocks). The birth of lambs on a farm, lambing happens between March and April.
- Crutching- Sheep and Lambs, especially when grazing on rich pasture, scour at times and become dirty round the hindquarters. This is also a sign that the animals are affected by worms. This job is important; before shearing, which is made much more easy and pleasant by doing this, also before the ewes are put to the ram for mating.
- Foot Trimming- Should be carried out twice a year to prevent sheep from going lame and to control the disease within the foot. Keep feet trimmed with a knife and/or clippers and sheep exercised to keep feet in good condition. Use a foot bath regularly with a form of antiseptic.
- Shearing- Is a mandatory requirement as on animal welfare grounds. Sheep shear best when the weather is warm and sunny. The wool is said to 'rise' on no account should sheep be shorn under wet conditions. Once favourable weather conditions prevail, shearing should proceed without delay. This will also avoid damage from blow-fly.
We also give help and advice for the small holder. We try and shear for the small holder though we can shear up to 50 sheep if asked. We also provide a farm sitting service at competitive rates, we stay on your farm and look after your livestock and pets while you have a break away.
